Matt LaRochelle: Success with Crossfit & Zone

Matt LaRochelle writes about his amazing journey from overweight and out of shape to  healthy and fit through Crossfit & the Zone.  He started out at 246 pounds with a 38/40 waist.  He currently weighs 187 pounds and his waist is 32/33.  Not only has he lost weight but he is stronger, faster, and more capable to enjoy his family.  So proud of what Matt has done with consistency.  You are truly an inspiration.  Below is Matt’s story in his words. ~Jeremy

*Pictured above from left to right Matt in September 2010 (246 pounds), January 2011 (225 pounds), and January 2012 (187 pounds).

In the middle of September 2010 I started my intro classes at Crossfit Kinnick. Jonathan Kinnick had asked me to come check it out so I gave it a chance. I was 246 pounds with a 38/40 inch waist and had zero control over my weight or physical fitness. The funny thing is that I thought I was still pretty healthy. I remember doing my first “Helen”. It was modified of course: I did 3 rounds 200m run, some kettlebell swings(35#), and some RING ROWS–I couldn’t do a pull up on bands! I remember driving home after the gym and having to pull over at some elementary school on Euclid so I could dry heave and walk around cause I couldn’t breathe. I was pretty jacked up. At that time I realized then how out of shape I was. I signed up for the classes-always 3 days a week and whenever I could get it to fit my schedule.

Over time, I started to move up the pull-up band colors and I was starting to lose a little weight. At the end of December, I finally got my first unassisted pull-up…That was a big deal for me! When the New Year came, the trainers announced a ZONE challenge was coming up and they encouraged me to join—I jumped at the chance. I took the competition very serious and for 8 weeks I did everything I was told to do. I ate measured amounts of food for the first time in my life. I didn’t cheat one time in the 8 weeks and I was amazed at how good I was feeling. At the start of the competition I weighed 225.5 pounds and by the time the 8 weeks were over, I had lost 24.5 pounds and 8% body fat. I was HOOKED. Since January of last year, I have continued to ZONE and I find it easy for me. I eat the same types of things all the time. I always eat 2 eggs and 2oz of meat for breakfast with either some Coaches Oats or Veggies and Fruit. I eat 4 oz of meat and a big salad and a piece of fruit every day for lunch and for dinner, I eat 4 oz of meat and I usually sautee whatever veggies I have. I eat almonds, olives, good oils, and other nuts for my fat. I now allow myself to “cheat” a little here and there, but I never go crazy. Sunday through Saturday afternoon, I eat VERY strict. I now do a lot of the workouts RXd and I competed in Battle of the Boxes. This year I will conquer my first muscle up and handstand push-up. I want to continue getting stronger and faster and better at life.

People in my life tell me they don’t have time to work out or that they don’t have time to cook meals at home. I am a husband, father, grad student, and I am involved in church activities. I work sometimes 40+ hours a week and for most of the past year, I worked 2 jobs. Some days I spend 2 hours on the freeways to make it to and from work. I figured out after my son was born, that my health doesn’t only effect me but effects my ability to be the best dad that I can be for him. I am addicted to Crossfit and I am forever grateful to Jonathan, Amy, Jeremy, Jake, and everyone else for making all of this past year so awesome for me and my family.

First Pull-up @ 59 years old!

YouTube Preview Image

Congratulations are in order!  If you have been to the 5pm or 6pm classes you can’t help but notice the bubbly personality in the video above!  If you don’t know her name its Teri Cappuccio and she is 59 years young.  She has been with us for 6 months and just got her first kipping pull ups. In 59 years of life she has never been able to complete one.  Simply amazing Teri!  She started off on ring rows like many of our clients do.  She progressed to thick bands on the pull up bar and steadily worked her way to smaller bands.  If she can do it so can you!  Its real simple.  Just continue to work hard in the warm up and before you know it the progression will take you to the same place Teri is right now.  The beauty of Crossfit is that we can make it work for all fitness levels and all walks of life.  Be sure to tell Teri congrats on her accomplishment.  Great work Teri!  We are all so very proud of you and proud to be your trainers!  Keep it up.

Newest Red Shirt!!!

Check out Phil showing off his newly acquired RED SHIRT!  Phil is the 3rd person at the gym to achieve this status.  Great work Phil.  He is quickly becoming one of the top athletes at the gym.  Phil is a hard worker and noticed a huge improvement in his overall performance while working on his RED SHIRT.  It makes sense if you think about it.  The colored shirts are representative of broad and general fitness.  Meaning…you have to be pretty good at everything.  From running, to core strength, to powerlifting, and so forth.  So working on those weaknesses will make you a better athlete and Crossfitter.

He had 1 month to complete all the tasks for the RED SHIRT. It was down to the wire, but he got it all in. Show Phil some love with some comments here and/or tell him good job.  You will probably see him in his RED SHIRT, I am pretty sure he sleeps in it most nights.  Great work Phil!!!!  Keep it up bud.  My question to all of you is…Who is next??  Challenge yourself guys.  Especially with the Zone Challenge going on.  Great time to start it up or finish up your Shirt.

Veronica’s Muscle Up!

YouTube Preview Image

I want to say Congrats to our rockstar athlete Veronica Bocanegra for getting her first muscle up on Monday the 18th. I quickly grabbed the camera and caught her 2nd one on video. Pretty awesome!

Whats even more awesome is the very next day was a workout involving muscle ups. It was Wall Balls and Muscle ups and Veronica did 2 muscle ups each round for 5 rounds. For those of you who have your muscle ups and remember getting your first muscle up, you know how hard it is to get those next few especially in a workout. Great work Veronica!! Great WORK!

If you don’t have your Muscle Ups and are wondering how the heck she did it, here is what it takes. In order to do a muscle up you have to be able to do a chest to bar pull up on the rings then dip out of it. So check it out, the Crossfit Kinnick Bodyweight warm up will get you prepared for the pull up side of the muscle up. Its up to you to spend time working on your ring dips. You can work on them daily, utilizing the first 10 mins of the hour before class or after class.

Veronica can do 6 ring dips in a row and has been working hard on her dips since Regionals. She went out and bought some rings that her husband Tony put up in the garage…talk about dedication! Its very simple to do, you just have to put in the time. Consistency and proper technique/range of motion. If you aren’t sure if you can do one just give it a try. If you need some help go ahead and ask one of your trainers to help you out. My question to you is…Who is next??

  2. Autumn Vallecorsa says:

I’m so proud of you. You give me encouragement. How long did it take you to get there and how often were you practicing?

  3. veronica says:

Thanks Autumn! It took me a while. I would go to the gym and practice before the workout as well as doing push ups with my arms close to my body really helped. Just keep practicing your dips and strict pull ups and you will get there pretty soon!!!
