If you don’t let the bar get to your hips before jumping while Snatching, you will die. Kidding! Kidding! But you will miss your lift. CrossFit recently posted this gem of a drawing on their Instagram page and I had to repost. Not only is it hilarious, but it’s incredibly informative.
I’ve been teaching the Olympic Lifts in regular group classes and in specialty Olympic Lifting classes at CrossFit Kinnick for 8 years now. Hands down, the biggest issue I come across is jumping too early. Athletes are so eager to get the bar up to the shoulders or overhead that all they want to do is jump immediately. The best lifters are going to be the most patient lifters. Stand up, pass the shins, pass the knees, pass the thighs, then unleash the fury.
The same rule applies to both the Clean & Jerk and the Snatch. Watch the videos below to spot the bar getting to the hips before the jump.
