This December marks our 5th year of affiliation with CrossFit HQ. It’s been a wild ride, but we wouldn’t have changed a thing. We’ve grown into the athletes, trainers, and role models we originally set out to be. And there is still more to come!
CFK: A Brief History
Believe it or not, it all started with a movie. It was the year 2007 and 300 was the summer’s hottest new action flick. If you haven’t seen it yet, without giving anything away, imagine lots and lots of chiseled pecs, abs, and biceps. It was a real eye-opener as far as how not in-shape we were. Long story short, we looked into what the actors had been doing to get screen-ready and we started doing it ourselves. That originally led us to Gym Jones and, ultimately, to CrossFit.
To understand our humble beginnings you need to look no further than the progress of our gym space. Jonathan Kinnick and I began working out at a local park and in a friend’s garage. We didn’t have much. Only a couple barbells and a few sets of dumbbells. Our workouts revolved around what we had. While they may not have been super varied, they were still very challenging. Within weeks we moved to Jeremy’s garage. We turned it into a mini version of the gym you see now. We built a squat rack and installed a bunch of pull-up bars from the ceiling. Huge props go out to Giermaine Kinnick (Jeremy’s wife) for putting up with all the noise we made. As small as our gym was, it really helped to lay the foundation for the future motivation and confidence required to continue to grow. To this day it keeps us grounded and reminds us of our humble beginnings.
Our most recent stop is the building you go to now, though it wasn’t always as pretty. Everything in our current gym was crafted by our very own hands. It used to be an old Sunkist factory back in the 70s; the 40 year old oranges we found in the rafters while cleaning were proof of that. We knocked down a couple of walls, slapped on a couple coats of paint, and hand built the restrooms, showers, and office space. We’re incredibly proud of it! It bleeds CrossFit. And, while it isn’t the most state of the art gym out there, it has provided ample training space for Jeremy Kinnick to qualify for 4 different CrossFit Games, as well as help us to send a CFK team to every single CrossFit Regional event since the inception of the current competition format.
What really makes our gym amazing though are the members that fill its walls. Each day we’re amazed at how many people share our love of fitness and health, and how wonderful those people are. We’ve managed to build an awesome community that genuinely cares about its members, and that’s what we’re most proud of. We’re not exactly sure where our next stop will be, but the awesome thing is that it doesn’t seem to matter. Our members make the gym and they always will.
Here’s to another 5 years!
