What Is CrossFit: Constantly Varied

At some point you’ve probably been approached by family and friends with questions about CrossFit.  I personally know how difficult it can be to explain to someone so used to the globo gym way of doing things.  You may have even chosen instead to go with the always available “come to the gym with me so you can see for yourself” explanation.  Let’s be honest though, that’s the easy way out.  Knowing exactly what CrossFit is will not only help you to explain it better to curious on-lookers, but it will also improve your personal understanding and, thus, your appreciation for the amazing strength and conditioning program.

What is CrossFit?
If you remember only 3 things about CrossFit, make sure it’s the 3 pieces that make up the common definition:

  • Constantly Varied
  • Functional Movements
  • (performed at) High Intensity
*If you can remember each of those and their accompanying details, you’re in good shape.


Constantly Varied
I was watching the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games on ESPN2 recently and at the beginning of one of the events they played a “What is CrossFit” video that I thought was absolutely brilliant.  It’s simple and to the point.



In short, CrossFit aims to keep your training varied because life is varied.  You never know what situation you might find yourself in.  Our training reflects that.
